3 Most Popular Sports in India

Across the world, people love sports, and India is no exception. India and Myanmar sports stories are very popular in regional news publications, and fans flock to football stadiums and cricket grounds across the country to catch the latest match-ups.

Just like with virtually everything in the global community, popular sports in India differ slightly compared to popular sports in other countries. India has a rich history of supporting sporting events and competitive trials, and today, Indians of all ages line up to watch and play games across the country.

Below are three of the most popular sports in India and surrounding countries:

Cricket

Although cricket is surpassed by baseball and other sports in the United States, it is one of the dominant pastimes in India. Cricket looks similar to American baseball in that players use bats to hit balls while the opposing team remains in the outfield. The rules of cricket may seem complex to someone who has never played the sport before, but with a little bit of practice and study, cricket is actually quite simple.

Football/American Soccer

Although Americans refer to it as soccer, much of the rest of the world refers to the sport where a ball is kicked into a goal as football. Football in India is wildly popular, and leagues compete fiercely for titles and recognition.

Football leagues compete regionally, as evidenced by various publications dealing with Myanmar sports stories and sports stories from other areas across the globe. India also competes internationally at various competitions, and children across India are known to idolize football stars.

Badminton

Interestingly, badminton is one of the more popular sports in India. Badminton is similar to tennis, although it is played on a smaller court using a shuttlecock instead of a tennis ball. Players use rackets that are similar to tennis rackets, but they are slimmer and have a smaller netting.

The goal in badminton is the same in that opposing players attempt to get the shuttlecock past one another, but the techniques used for hitting the shuttlecock differ from those used against a tennis ball.
